Pet of the Month.

kona October 2022

How did you come to live with your current family? In early 2018, I made the trip from Sacramento to this wonderful but very loud and busy place in Lynnwood called Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). I was hungry and out of sorts, so I spent a lot of time curled up on a cot in the corner. When my mom walked past my kennel — on the way to look for a nice mutt — she hesitated. I raised my head, flicked my pointy ears, gave a piercing look with my blue eye… and suddenly found myself a new home! (Good thing the humans at the shelter accidentally wrote down that I was 4 instead of 1.5 years old. Tee hee. She never saw my adolescent antics coming!)

What Silly or Little known facts should we know about you? I don’t tell just anyone, but I prefer to start my morning with a belly rub while I’m still snuggly on my bed. *Ahem* but to redeem my wolfy reputation, I will share that (when I was younger and more spry), I would get into “Beast Mode” during games of chase at the dog park and run full speed towards dogs before catapulting myself over them at the last second. Also, I’m good at picking berries directly from the bush. Salal and blueberries are my favorite.

Besides Day Care… what do you love? Snow! Snow bathing, snow running, snow digging, snow camping, snow… Also: treats, hunting, crisp fall breezes, running through fresh grass in the spring, and being chased by my human when I escape.

What are your favorite toys or games? I love playing hide and seek at the dog park. Anything that uses my mind and body. And when I’m tired from both, nothing beats chewing a good treat or ripping apart a stuffy.

For enrichment, what do you prefer? food, scent, movement? something else? Movement and food. I do best when I work hard (bikejoring and skijoring are extra fun!) and then get rewarded with tasty treats.

If you had a major in college…what would it be? Astrophysics

If you wrote a personal ad… what would it say? Sassy but sophisticated 6ish year-old female. Had a tough life in my youth. Living my best life now. Love long sprints on the beach and digging in sand and snow. Serious most of the time. Goofy when I want to be. All on my terms.

Describe your perfect day. Sleep in. Play in the snow til I’m exhausted. Nap. Hunt. Get chased in the snow by my human or dog friends. Eat a big meal, followed by a dessert of cheese and peanut butter. Sleep on my gigantic fluffy bed.

We know your real name is, but what are some of your nicknames? Kona Bear, KB, Goober, Silly Goose, Goose, and sometimes when I’m being spicy: Hey Punk!.

What was your favorite trip you’ve taken? Any time I’m backpacking in the mountains! I don’t always like the backpack but I’m pretty proud after we finish walking and I have extra treats I carried with me!

Do you have a best dog friend? At Tails or outside of Tails. I like lots of dogs at Tails. Out in the wild, I always searched for my pointy-eared cousins first. I have a Samoyed friend named Sebastian who once got our leashes tangled when I first met him. He got excited about a nearby duck and pulled me into a lake. I hate getting wet. But he was right — it was refreshing and worth the chase. I now allow him to be my friend.

Are you a morning dog or a night owl? Hoooooowwwl!!

Peanut butter or whipped cream? Did you say PEANUT BUTTER?! That’s my favorite.

Ball or stick? Stick, please!

What’s the stinkiest thing you have ever rolled in? Seagull poop on Alki Beach. It was so fun. I covered my whole coat in salty poopy fish scent and we got to drive all the way home with the windows down.

Where is your favorite place to sleep? (and no, you won’t get in trouble if you say your Hoomon’s Bed) Curled up in a tent after I try to steal my human’s sleeping bag, of course.

Other information we should know about you? My human is always going on such cool adventures that I really hate being left alone. I’ve heard them call it “separation anxiety”. So, my mom and I are super grateful for my canine and human pals at Tails-A-Wagging, where I’m never lonely.
