Frequently Asked Questions about Doggie Day Care

What is Doggie Day Care?
Doggie Day Care is care of your dog during the day while you are away at work, running errands, day travel or just fun for your pet.

Can any dog come to Doggie Day Care?
Each dog privately receives a temperament screening prior to being accepted into Doggie Day Care. This is a process that should only be done by a pet professional who is trained in animal behavior. The screening should take place in 3 parts. 1) Phone consultation: The pet care provider will ask key questions to learn more about your dogs behavior and temperament. 2) Private consultation with you and your pet: Plan on at least 30 minutes of one on one time with the pet care provider going over very detailed information about your pet. They may perform specific behavioral tests with your dog. 3) Plan to leave your dog at Doggie Day Care to begin the transition process. At Tails-A-Wagging we have specific areas to aid in this. Depending on your pets temperament, we will introduce each dog to the pack individually. This process can take up to 6-8 hours. It may seem very involved, as it should be. Safety should be your number one concern and introductions should always be done slowly under a watchful, trained eye.

Are there certain breeds of dogs you do not accept?
NO... as educated canine trainers we know there is no such thing as an "aggressive breed". People who think this are simply uneducated about dogs. All dogs were bred for a purpose from Rottweilers ( bred to herd and guard other animals ) to Chihuahuas ( bred to be a companion ) to Newfoundland's ( bred for water rescue ). Dogs who were bred for a  particular purpose ( like guarding or herding ) have certainly been TRAINED to do other things. ( Example: Pit Bulls and fighting ) Why were they trained to fight? Because they were originally trained as  a guard dog and this makes them 1) loyal 2)Tenacious 3) Pain tolerant etc...Also the same reason they are GREAT for a family!

Now, are some certain dogs (remember not breeds, but dogs) aggressive? Of course...these particular dogs can not come to day care. But these are dogs who were not socialized properly, did not learn bite inhibition as a puppy etc.  Any individual who tells you (and this goes for other doggie day cares) they don't allow "aggressive breeds" are simply uneducated people who follow the stereotype of a bad dog. This should be a HUGE red flag to you, they think they are preventing problems by simply denying day care for "bad breeds". I honestly believe they are setting themselves up for a huge problem. It tells me they have no idea how to properly screen a dog, and this could result in a huge problem.

Rumor has it you are full anyway... what to do?
It's true we are often full with standing reservations for dogs coming to day care. If we are full you are certainly welcome to come down to have your dog put onto our wait list.  This is how our wait list works:

We do require people come down in person to get on the list. You fill out some contact information about you and we talk about your dog and their behavior and experiences. Then, if after 6 months you have not heard from us we ask that you call us to let us know you still want to be on our wait list. If a spot becomes available and there are dogs on the list whose guardians have not called in, we simply call the next dog who has called. This prevents us from keeping dogs on the list who  no longer need day care as their situation has changed. So although we may have many dogs on the list, you may get in sooner than you think! Believe me...we are worth the wait!

If you are in need of day care services now,  please feel free to call us and we will gladly give you a reference to another local doggie day care provider. We are happy to help. Please know, we would only recommend another service who has the same standards as we do, and would never recommend a facility that does not have qualified trainers on staff at all times.

Something you should know....we work VERY hard here at TAW to provide your dogs with the best day possible. Not only do we provide fun organized games and activities but solid training work on good manners. If you choose to take your dog to a doggie day care facility that is not up to our standards, your dog will not be allowed at TAW. Let me explain why. At TAW we are constantly working with positive reinforcement clicker training to secure good manners...those very manners can fly right out the door if allowed to by another facility who is not properly trained in canine obedience. We will not spend all of our time "fixing" what other facilities have allowed to occur. Every moment your dog is here is spent loving, caring, playing, training, grooming and an all around good time with trained staff.

What is required of my dog?
Dogs must not be aggressive towards other dogs or people. Dogs cannot be possessive over their toys. Dogs must be current on all required vaccinations (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies) Adult dogs must be spayed or neutered, and all dogs must be free from internal and external parasites, as well as be on a flea preventative. A recent fecal test, performed by your veterinarian is required. Since each dog is screened individually, no breed is automatically eliminated. There are, however, medical reasons your dog may not be allowed into Doggie Day Care. Blindness and seizure type disorders are two medical conditions that are not allowed in Doggie Day Care.

What do the dogs do all day?
Tails-A-Wagging is not like any day care you have ever known before. For the dogs at our day care their day is very structured. Most dogs are dropped off between 7 and 9 am. We break off into groups in the early morning (at 7:30am), and do lots of free play for a few hours, usually with minimal toys so the dogs can meet and greet. Each play group has their own indoor play room and own yard.  The dogs rotate in and out all day long. Typically that is 1 hr inside and 20 minutes outside.  All dogs get a rest time during the day. Our rest time is in a  crate with a soft bed and a stuffed Kong.  If a dog has a mid day meal, we can use this to stuff their Kong at rest time.  Any dogs who need medication can be given it as needed throughout the day.
Our goal at Tails-A-Wagging, is to work your dogs body AND mind. We want them tired-out at the end of the day from playing, socializing and experiencing many new things. Interactive games, grooming time, clicker training time- are just some of our activities. We are constantly working on good behaviors thru only reward based training...since the dogs are NEVER left alone by themselves, someone is always working with them. Sitting and waiting at every door to learning new tricks, we provide it all for your dog! (and at no additional charge) The bulk of the day is spent clicker training, chewing, interactive games, pool time,  teeth brushing (yes, every dog gets their teeth brushed every day), petting, loving,  and group wrestling games.  Most dogs then get picked up between 4 and 6pm

Can I come and see the facility?
YES! You are welcome anytime. We are open Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm. Early morning and late afternoon times are very busy because of dogs bring dropped off or picked up, so we may have more time to give you a tour during the midday, but you are welcome anytime. We have over 10,000 sq. feet of indoor and outdoor play areas for dogs. Soft beds to sleep on, rubber floors inside for cushion, tons of durable toys suited for tough play, and dogs have access to water at all times. You can come down to meet our staff. All of our day care attendants are trained in animal behavior and certified in pet CPR and first aid. No time to come down today???? Go to our live video web cams and watch the dogs right now!

Is Tails-A-Wagging a "Green" Business?

YES! All of our indoor flooring is rubber...made from 100% recycled tires.  We use bio degradable cleaners when ever possible (our daily sanitation product is specifically formulated to prevent canine disease) All wall paint is low VOC.  We are part of the Towards Zero Waste Program with Sustainable Connections. www.sustainableconnections.org We generate 80% less waste than other Doggie Day Care's. We recycle all paper, cardboard, cans, glass,  food/compostable items, formed and film plastic. We use biodegradable poo pick up bags at our potty stations. We reduce our waste by purchasing products in which the packaging can be recycled. We use our Food Plus Bin for all compostable waste. We have on site compost and worm bins, for use in our landscape. We use washable hand towels instead of paper towels, whenever possible. Dog waste is primarily our only waste product that goes into the trash/landfill. We buy and serve only vegan dog food and treats. (yup...we're vegan too!)

What about fleas?
All dogs who come to Doggie Day Care are required to either be on a flea preventative medication or will be check for fleas every time they come. If fleas are found on your pet, they will be sent home. Our facility is specifically set up to not inhabit fleas as our outdoor yard and rubber floor are cleaned and sanitized daily.

The outdoor yard is asphalt, isn't that hard on their paws?

We have two outdoor yards. One for large dogs and one for small dogs.  The substrate is asphalt although this is a hard ground it is actually a recommended ground for outdoor yards in Doggie Day Care's because it can be cleaned and sanitized. Our dog yards are cleaned and sanitized every day. Grass would not only turn to mud and be impossible to clean if internal or external parasites were brought in. The outdoor yard is fully fenced with 6 foot chain link fence that is secured to steel poles embedded into the asphalt ground. Our indoor play area is covered with wall to wall  SEALED rubber mats for cushion.

The dogs are taken out to the yard every 30 minutes for potty time.  Every time a dog goes potty outside we reward them by marking the behavior with a "click" then a treat.

How many dogs come to Doggie Day Care?
At Tails-A-Wagging, we currently average 61 dogs per day. Maximum Capacity is about 36 large dogs and 25 small dogs. Some dogs come everyday, some 2 to 3 days per week and some maybe just once a month. It all depends on your needs, however, we are by reservation only.

What about big dogs and small dogs together?
Many small dogs may think they are a big dog, but any Doggie Day Care should have separate rooms for both small and big dogs as they need to be separated for different play games. We have three large play rooms. Two for large dogs, and one for small dogs. The small dogs also have their own outside play yard, while the large dogs share one between the two groups.

Do the dogs fight?
Lets talk about fighting in dogs...it is inevitable that if you get a group of dogs playing in a room together some one may get a scratch to small "owie" now and then. Dogs often come to day care because they have high energy and play rough, therefore they seek out other rough players. But no day care should have  a continuation of full blown fights. If they do it means dogs are not screed properly. Play nips that may have resulted in a wound can occur,  you must know this going in. DOGS PLAY HARD...this is the nature of dogs.  But know this, every day care... no matter how great, has had a dog fight before...don't let anyone kid you.

What do the dogs do all day?
At Tails-A-Wagging the dogs day is very structured. Most dogs are dropped off between 7 and 9 am. We provide free play for a few hours, usually with minimal toys so the dogs can meet and greet. After that we break off into groups where some of the dogs may come inside and play a specific game or toy with a pet care provider, while another is outside with a different group. Our goal here, besides  giving you a completely tired-out dog at the end of the day is for your dog to experience new things. Interactive games, grooming time, clicker training time- are just some of our activities. We are constantly working on good behaviors thru only reward based training...since the dogs are NEVER left alone by themselves, someone is always working with them. Noon is lunch time, if a dog has a mid day meal, this also is time for us to give any medications to dogs who need it. (Dogs are always taken aside a fed alone) Around 1:00 pm its free play again, usually with all the toys- they can pick and choose what they like. All the dogs get a nap time as well as a snack in the middle of the day. We utilize crates for rest time.  If weather is nice we may bring out the sprinklers or water pool, running and jumping in the play ground area is always a fun activity too. Most dogs then get picked up between 4 and 6pm.

What type of toys dog you use?
We use more indestructible type toys: Kong's, Nylabones, Natural Rubber toys, Cotton Tugs... Know this: its true many Doggie Day Care center do not allow any toys in their facility. Why? Because they allow dogs in who are possessive around toys, so to prevent fights they simply do not allow toys at all.  At TAW, we have a different approach. Why punish many for the behavior of a few.  We simply do not allow dogs who have any possessive behaviors around food or toys to come to day care. We never have any plushy toys, tennis balls or food related toys.

My dog is shy around other dogs, is Doggie Day Care right for us?
Maybe.  Doggie Day Care is for already social dogs to have fun. If you dog is shy but completely appropriate in their behavior, we may be able to assist them on learning how to play more.  If your dog is shy and acts inappropriate to other dogs.. then no, day care is not the place for you. We encourage you to first come down for a tour. See the facility, see how safe the dogs are and how much fun they are having. Many dogs come to Doggie Day Care for many different reasons. Some come because they are an only dog and want fun and exercise. Some come for the socialization and ability to "be a dog", and some have separation anxiety and need to be around people and other dogs. Because we have different areas of the Day Care, we can help your dog socialize with other dogs their own size and temperament. We have had many dogs who have been timid before coming to Doggie Day Care who are now confident, socialized dogs who are more sure of themselves in pack situations.

What kind of training do you have?
We have over 22 years experience in professional pet care. Co-Owner Angela Lenz is a licensed Animal Health Technician in Washington State, as well as a  Small Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer sine 1992. We have received accreditation with the American Boarding Kennel Association in accordance with Doggie Day Care training and are certified American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluators and members of the Association of Pet Dog Training. Co-owner Jason Lenz is a Professional Pet Sitter since 1997 and has been providing behavioral training for dogs since 1998. All staff are certified in pet CPR and first aid as well as extensive behavioral training using only reward based methods.

Why is it just during the day? Can I board my dog overnight?
The City of Bellingham does not allow any overnight boarding of pets within the city limits. We close promptly at 6pm and your pet must be picked up by then.  If you need overnight care, please ask for referrals to pet sitting services or a boarding kennel.

What if my dog is not accepted into Doggie Day Care?
Doggie Day Care is not for every dog. If your dog is not accepted into Day Care, try to not take is personally. It does not mean you have do have a bad dog, just one that not do well is this type of "pack" situation. If you still need care for you pet during the day, you may want to consider a pet sitter to come to your home during the day to provide your dog with physical and mental stimulation.

    * Something you should know....we work VERY hard here at TAW to provide your dogs with the best day possible. Who’s Who, on the web site

    Doggie Snacks

At TAW we provide each and every dog with a snack in the middle of the day. However if your dog requires a special snack we ask that you bring it in a CLEAR- ZIPLOC type baggie with your pets name (FIRST AND LAST) clearly labeled on it.    (Black sharpie-pen is easiest for us to see)

    Authorization to pickup your dog

Remember, only individuals that you have authorized will be allowed to pick up your dog from day care.  Please do not send any one to do so if we have not had written confirmation from you.  Once we receive their information we can enter them into the computer (name and phone contact information) and it will be your responsibility to have us remove them from the list should your situation change.

    Your Dog’s Physical Health

Some canine diseases can be contagious to other dogs.  For the health and safety of all the dogs at day care, we ask that if your dog is showing ANY of the following symptoms you do not send them to day care:  Vomiting, Diarrhea, Coughing, Sneezing (not allergy related) and Lethargy. If, when at day care, the staff notices that your dog appears ill, your dog will be isolated and you will be called to come and pick up your dog.  If medical attention is needed for your dog, a note or call from your veterinarian may be required for his return.

    The vaccines we require are:
Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, (this is a combo vaccine also known as DHPP)

We require DHPP every 3 years for an adult dog

     Rabies

We require Rabies every 3 years for an adult dog

    Bordetella

If vaccine administered intranasal (drops in the nose) we require Bordetella every 6 months.

If vaccine administered as an injection, we require Bordetella every year.

Puppies must receive a series of vaccines before 5 months of age then yearly until pet becomes an adult.  If your pet has only recently been vaccinated for the first time, a waiting period of 10 days is required.

Titer Testing: We do accept titer testing for all vaccines, except Rabies, for dogs over 3 years of age.

    Fecal Test

Your dog is required to have a negative fecal test upon attending day care for the first time, as well as a test every 6 months.

    Fleas

We pride ourselves on having an extremely clean environment.  All dogs who come to day care need to be free of all external parasite (fleas, ticks etc) We require that your dog is on a flea preventive during the months of April thru October. If a flea is found on your dog while they are at day care your dog may be sent home.  If we have availability to give your dog a bath, we may choose to do so at your expense.

    Your Dogs Mental Health

Dogs, being sentient beings, can be very “tuned in” to the stresses at home.  If there are any changes in your household we ask that you keep us informed.  We can often see a change in your dogs behavior when they are under stress and it is helpful for us to know so we can better deal with the situation.  Examples of stresses to your dog can be, but are not limed to: * Home Remodels * Vacations of any family member * someone new into the household            * Someone leaving the house hold * A new pet * Loss of an existing pet      * New medications for your pet

We are not trying to be nosey…. We care about your pets well being
